The plan of the premises is drawn straight after the initial scene assessment is created in most criminal investigations and is done by the same scenes of crime officer that completed the initial scene assessment, this is because they will have the best overall view of what the crime scene looks like as well as where the evidence is located. This plan is very beneficial to the investigation as it can be used by the scenes of crime officers to keep track of the evidence that is being collected and moved from the crime scene, in some cases it can also allow the scenes of crime officers to find new information or evidence as a pattern of evidence could be found, for example, blood could be found in a number of locations and by drawing these locations out the start point and final destination of the blood trail can be seen which could result in the scenes of crime officers finding a new location to analyse. This plan can also be used in court to give the jury an overview of what the scene looked like and how everything was layed out before the investigation took place.
OJ Simpson
In the OJ Simpson case where OJ allegedly killed Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman there was no actual plan of the premises sketch drawn by the scenes of crime officers, instead a brief overview of the scene was written by some of the detectives who were working on the case at the time. This meant that there was no clear overview of how the house was set out which made it very difficult for the prosecution team when in court as they were not able to show the jury where about the evidence was found, where the crime took place and other aspects of the building which could have been beneficial to talk about.
