The eleventh stage in the investigative process that the police have to follow during a case is report writing and presentation of evidence in court. This is the last stage that the police have to follow during their investigation of a crime, in this process the police have to put together all the evidence and why they think a specific suspect or suspects have committed the crime. this case file will then be used as evidence in court against the suspect or the crime. There are many different things that need to go into the case file so that it can be used in court as this is what the judge will use to get an overview of the crime. The police must include whether they have convicted any other suspects during the investigation, a basic summary of the whole investigation including the stages that where followed by the police (which is written by the highest commanding officer on the case), witness statements would be stored in the case file, all evidence found during the investigation must be listed with photographs if necessary, as well as an analysis of each piece of evidence.
OJ Simpson:
In the case where OJ Simpson allegedly killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman there was a very controversial court case, in the end OJ was not convicted with the crime, many people saw this as brilliant work from the dream team which included Robert Kardashian, Lee Bailey, Robert Shapiro, Alan Dershowitz and Gerald Uelmen.
However, there where many other reasons why in the end OJ was not charged for murder. One of the main reasons was the lack of evidence that could actually be used in court, this was due to how bad the forensic evidence collection team was when gathering evidence from the crime scene, a lot of the evidence was contaminated at the scene as the forensic team did not follow protocol, but even most of the evidence that they did manage to successfully take from the crime scene could not be used because of the way that it was bagged and recorded. Once a piece of evidence was collected the person who collected it should have put the details of the evidence into the chain of custody but they didn't, this meant that when it arrived in the lab at a later date the person who was going to analyse it thought that it was not supposed to be there so no further analysis was done on the evidence. Multiple pieces of evidence was also placed in the same bags which rendered them useless as this resulted in contamination which meant that it could not be used in court.
The piece of evidence that at the time was the polices main link to the crime and OJ was the glove that was found at the scene which was identical to one found at his home. When OJ was in court the police wanted him to try on the glove to see if it would fit as OJ denied ever seeing the glove and claimed that detective Mark Fuhram planted the glove at his house as he was a racist. It was at this point when OJ's lawyer said to the Judge; "if it does not fit then you must acquit," meaning that if the glove did not fit OJ then he could not be charged for the crime. The glove was too small for OJ which meant that he could not be charged which shocked the police, but what they did not realise was that for the glove to be preserved it had to be frozen and due to the glove being soaked with blood the glove shrank which is why it did not fit in the court room.
